Update!

I've been posting my stories at my website, but I have been forgetting to post links here. I'm not sure if anyone is interested in reading my work, but I'll remember to post the links to my site here just in case. This is a continuation of the story of Aladdin (the one from A THousand and One Nights) called The Echo of Eons: http://www.keppiehed.com/includes/story/library.php?sid=231l11698. I wrote it for Zimbell House Publishing, which has some really great opportunities for writers, if any of you are interested: contests/submissions here!

I know I've been really absent lately; the start of the school year seems like it has been rocky this time! I'm buried under conflicting kids schedules/illnesses/etc. In happy news, I was asked to join the staff of Bedlam Publishing in a newly created position as submissions editor! So I am really thrilled about that. We're just beginning the process of looking through submissions for the third issue of Loud Zoo, their online literary magazine, so I have my hands full with that job. It's been a daunting but educational experience. I hope I'm doing a good job. Eeek!

I'm also keeping my chin up about writing. It comes and goes as far as rejections and acceptances are concerned (as you guys know!) so it's important to keep going with it. I've only had eleven acceptances this year, which feels a bit like a loss somehow, but the year isn't over yet.

In unrelated news, I just got back from a great trip to Stratford, Ontario. For those of you who don't know Stratford, it is known for its outstanding repertory theater, most notably their excellent Shakespeare productions. I was invited to take a trip with my sister and her friend, a world famous Shakespeare webcomic artist. We had a wonderful time! Stratford had a fantastic season this year, and I was able to see two shows: an avante garde production of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Gershwin's Crazy For You. I can't praise them enough; they were just phenomenal. To say I rarely get out is an understatement, but these made up for the lack. I feel fortified enough to dance through winter now. Here I am basking like a queen in hotel room and another pic of me with a random gnome on a street in Stratford:

me on bed in Stratford
me and a garden gnome in Stratford

I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the fall season, especially if you live somewhere with beautiful foliage. Take care of yourselves! <3

Up and down. Thirteen-year-old girl. Stacking wood. Writer's block. Life in general. The usual, I suppose. :)

Teen daughter: ouch! :) How did she get so old, though, seriously? It seems like she was 10 years old yesterday, oh my gosh! But good luck and godspeed to you on that one. My daughter just turned 15 and I'm still holding on for dear life! They keep you on your toes, don't they?

I try to keep up with what's going on with you, but I've been terribly out of commission, so I missed the part about stacking wood. It sounds strenuous. And writer's block is frustrating, so I feel you there. Are you still taking nature walks? I'm afraid the last I heard you were considering a kayak. Did that ever come to pass? I've been a terrible LJ friend! I hope to be more present now that I'm settling into the school routine and some of the hospital tests are behind us for the time being (I hope ... you know how it goes). I need to catch up on your posts!

Spent lots of time out in the kayak when the weather allowed it. Met a lovely family of ospreys. Lots of nature walks, lots of rambling nature posts... we're cutting and stacking wood now to get ready for winter, because we heat with a wood burner.

Writer's block is partly the slow demise of LoTR as a fandom, the general lack of interest in my next-generation original characters (the children of Aragorn, Faramir, etc), and a lack of any good place to work on or share original fic. I'm back and forth on the Marvel stuff, because it does very well on AO3, but as with most stories I never really have a clue where it's going.

I am impressed that you learned to kayak. It sounds a little scary! I have been canoeing before and I am terrible at it! The kids always let me sit in the middle and every one of them is better than I am, which is pathetic! I hate to think of what would happen to me if I had no one but myself in a kayak in the middle of a lake! AHHH!

As for writing: it's really discouraging when there isn't a good response to what you're doing. I'm sorry. You are a good writer; you deserve to get good feedback. I hope you are enjoying it when it's flowing.

I learned to kayak when I was just a kid, and I learned on a river, white-water rafting, so paddling around on a flat lake is pretty tame! I knew how to roll a kayak by the time I was probably about ten. My mother was into white-water rafting and she took us with her. So the simple mechanics of it came back to me very quickly, although it's a bit different with a lake, because in a river you're either going with the current and just paddling enough to steer or you're going through some rough water and you're paddling REALLY HARD to get around that rock, while in the lake, you're just paddling steadily all the time or else you're sitting still, so that took some getting used to.

That sounds very peaceful and also very empowering. And it's nice to get back to your roots in a way, to do something that you had learned from your childhood and be able to build on it now that you are an adult. There's something satisfying in that. Good for you! What an awesome thing to have done this summer!

Now, if I could just figure out a way to get back on a horse...
